Social Workers, Privilege and Advocacy

While I’m writing this post about the Social Work profession, it’s also relevant for many other helping professions.


The International Federation of Social Workers published a post titled Time for a New Social Rights Revolution.



Social Workers are trained in Anti-Oppressive Practice and more importantly, Social Workers are people who have high levels of compassion and empathy and believe in the inherent dignity and worth of persons.   For these reasons we are well suited to advocate for equality.


Social Workers are also human and are having internal reactions to what is happening around the world with respect to the protests of systemic racism and violence through the Black Lives Matter movement. 


We need to reflect on any privileges we have experienced because of our race, gender, class, age, abilities, religion.  While we may not belong to all of the dominant groups in these categories, the fact that we have a...

Stay safe while advocating for anti-racist polices

Many are Hurting. Many are Scared.  This can often present as Anger.
Expect the fear and grief to come and go throughout the days. Expect to be preoccupied and struggle with concentration.
Please be EXTRA mindful when doing anything that is potentially dangerous (cooking, running water, driving, using tools/equipment). Focus on the sense of touch when doing these activities. Tell yourself what you feel, what you see, what you're doing. Set timers for anything that is on/running (stove, bath).
When driving, tell yourself what street you're on. Pay attention to all intersections and watch for the colour of the traffic lights and vehicles around you. Focus on the sensations of the steering wheel and seats when idling. Stay present.
Limit your exposure to graphic details of trauma, but stay informed so you can stay safe. Find a buddy to take turns checking the news and keeping each other informed.
